Art Therapy for Creative Healing
Some Things Cannot Be Said. But They Can Be Made. And in the Making — They Heal.
There are parts of our inner life that resist language. Grief that has no words. Fear that has no name. Joy that feels too fragile to speak aloud. Trauma that went underground long before we had the vocabulary to describe it.
This is where creative expression becomes medicine.
Art therapy for healing is not about being an artist. It is not about producing something beautiful or technically impressive. It is about giving the inner world a form — colour, shape, line, symbol, texture — so that what has been held in silence finally has somewhere to go.
At Breathe of Love, creative expression and art therapy principles are woven into Vasanti's breathwork sessions as a powerful additional pathway for healing. When the breath opens the body and the inner world becomes more accessible, art becomes a natural language — one that often speaks more truly than words ever could. You do not need to be creative. You only need to be willing.
What Is Art Therapy — And What It Is Not
Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process — drawing, painting, collage, writing, movement, symbol-making — as a means of exploring and processing emotion, trauma, and inner experience. It is used in clinical settings worldwide and is recognised as a powerful modality for mental health, trauma recovery, and emotional well-being.
But let us be clear about what art therapy at Breathe of Love is — and is not:

It Is NOT an Art Class: You will not be assessed on your technique, your style, or your output. There is no right way to draw a feeling. There is no wrong colour for grief. The quality of what you create is completely beside the point — what matters is the quality of what moves through you while you create it.
It Is NOT Only for 'Creative People': One of the most healing things Vasanti hears from clients is: 'I can't draw.' Because that belief — I am not creative — is often itself part of what needs healing. The inner critic that says 'you are not good enough, you are not talented enough, you should not even try' is the same voice that keeps us small in every other area of life. In a safe, held creative healing session, that voice meets its match.
It IS a Language the Body Already Speaks: Before we had words, we had images. Before we had therapy, we had ritual, symbol, and story. The impulse to make — to express, to give form to inner experience — is one of the oldest healing instincts in the human soul. Art therapy honours this. It invites the body and the unconscious to speak in their native tongue.
It IS Most Powerful When Combined with Breathwork: At Breathe of Love, creative expression does not happen in isolation. It arises within a breathwork session — after the breath has opened the body, softened the defences of the analytical mind, and brought the inner world closer to the surface. In this state, what you create is not filtered through the performance anxiety of 'doing it right.' It comes from somewhere much deeper and much more true.
What Creative Expression Might Look Like in a Session?
Every session is different — because every person's inner world is different. Creative expression within a Breathe of Love breathwork session might include any of the following, always guided, always optional, always yours:
-
Free drawing or painting — putting colour and line on paper without any agenda or outcome in mind
-
Symbol and image work — drawing a symbol, image, or shape that represents your inner state, your healing, or your intention
-
Colour breathing — choosing and working with colours that correspond to feelings or energy centers in the body
-
Expressive writing or journalling — allowing words to pour out uncensored, stream-of-consciousness, after the breathwork opens the flow
-
Collage or visual mapping — gathering images, words, and shapes that represent your inner landscape
-
Mandala or sacred geometry — creating circular forms as a meditative, integrating practice
-
Post-session integration drawing — capturing what arose during the breathwork journey in visual form as a way of landing and remembering the experience
None of this requires art supplies more elaborate than a pen and paper. If you are joining online, Vasanti will guide you with whatever you have available. The medium is never the point. The expression is everything.

What Creative Healing Can Help You With?
Art therapy and creative expression within breathwork sessions at Breathe of Love offer a unique healing pathway for experiences and emotions that have resisted other approaches. This work is particularly powerful for:
Trauma That Has No Words
Much of trauma — especially early childhood trauma or body-based trauma — exists below the level of language. It was never encoded as a story or a memory. It lives in sensation, in image, in the wordless knowing of the body. Expressive arts therapy reaches into exactly this territory. When words cannot get there, art can.
Grief and Loss
Grief is one of the most creative experiences in the human repertoire — and one of the least supported. We are often given very little space or permission to express the full depth of what we lose. Creative healing within a breathwork session creates that space — without judgment, without time limits, without anyone telling you how grief is supposed to look. Whatever colour your grief is, it is welcome here.
Anxiety and the Overactive Mind
Anxiety lives in the thinking mind. Creative expression moves you out of the thinking mind and into the doing, sensing, feeling body. There is something about the act of making — of following your hand rather than your thoughts — that quiets the internal noise in a way that thinking about quieting the noise never can. Many clients describe creative expression in session as the first time in a long while that their mind went genuinely still.
The Inner Critic and Low Self-Worth
The inner critic is loudest in creative work — and that is precisely why creative work is such a powerful arena for healing it. In a safe, held session with Vasanti, the invitation to make something without judgment becomes a direct practice in self-compassion. Every mark on the page that you refuse to judge is a small act of reclaiming your worth.
Spiritual or Identity Transitions
Who am I becoming? What am I leaving behind? What does the next chapter of my life look like? These are questions the analytical mind tends to answer with plans and logic — but which the creative soul answers with image and symbol. Art therapy within a breathwork session is a profound tool for navigating life transitions, spiritual emergence, and identity shifts.
Creative Blocks and Lost Inspiration
If you are someone who has identified as creative — an artist, a writer, a musician, a maker of any kind — and you have lost your connection to that creative self, this work can help you find your way back. Creative blocks are rarely about creativity. They are about fear, safety, old wounds, and the need for permission. Breathwork and creative healing together go directly to the root.
Give Your Inner World a Voice It Has Been Waiting For
You have carried this in silence long enough. Let it become colour. Let it become line. Let it breathe.
Whatever you are holding — whatever part of your inner life has been waiting for a form, a witness, a safe place to be seen — there is a session at Breathe of Love that can hold it. Vasanti is ready. The page is blank. And that is exactly where every true thing begins.
